Hi! Thanks for visiting and learning more about Rocky Knob Farms. I’m Krysti Morrow and I’ll be
the face and voice behind the majority of the blog posts you find here. My husband Levi and I started Rocky Knob Farms in May of 2016 and have been working to grow and expand it ever since. I’ll give you a little back story first though to help you get to know us better.
Originally from Bowling Green, Ohio, the flatlands as Levi affectionately refers to it, I was raised inside the city limits and didn’t have really any clue what it took or how different life on a farm would be. I was very active in 4-H and FFA and had a growing interest in horses and riding throughout Jr. High and High School. I moved on to Ohio State after graduating high school and quickly realized there was more to agriculture and farming that I even knew existed. What I thought was a simple combine harvesting the corn and soybean fields around me growing up was truly a complex science that supports and employs a whole world of people.
The experience and knowledge I gained at Ohio State has stuck with me after graduating. From working in a soybean genetics research lab to creating content and putting on the State 4-H Skillathons two summers in a row at the Ohio State Fair my love for agriculture has only grown. Perhaps most important though was a study abroad trip to Ireland during 2012 that has had the most impact on my life. Through the persuasion of a mutual friend I met Levi in our pre-departure class for Ireland and started down a path I never thought I would find myself on. We spent 10 glorious days with 90 other Ohio State students touring and learning about the Emerald Isle and how their agriculture industry is similar and different than our own here in the U.S.
After graduating from Ohio State and before marrying Levi in the summer of 2015 I moved to McConnelsville, Ohio to start the next chapter of our life. Levi grew up here on his family’s farm and has always had the dream of farming full time. Assisting his parents’ cow/calf and small row crop operation kept us busy, we thought in that first year of marriage. Jump forward a year to May of 2016, when Levi and I purchased the land where Rocky Knob now sits and connects to his parents we started another dream. Still working closely with his parents, we have branched out to include produce and agritourism to our farm resume.
Throughout late spring and early summer, you’ll find us at the strawberry patch where customers come to pick their own strawberries. 2018 will be our first year in strawberry production and we’re excited to see where it takes us. During the main portion of summer, we grow a small amount of
produce – mainly tomatoes and sweet corn – that is available for purchase at our stand or the Morgan County Farmer’s Market. Our big season is fall at Rocky Knob Farms when we open up the whole farm for self-guided tours, school field trips, and group outings. We also have a pick your own pumpkin and gourd patch, corn maze, and fall themed games.
This blog will give you a little insight into what we do on our farm throughout the year based on the season and crops were focused on. I hope you enjoy seeing it through my eyes and ask questions when they arise so that I can help you understand farm life a little better.
Talk to you soon!
